Holland, or The Netherlands as it is properly called, is a flat and fertile land about 1/7th the size of Great Britain. With a populace of over 16 million it is the most densely populated country in Western Europe. To the east of Holland lies Germany and in the south Holland borders Belgium. Part of the country is made up of land reclaimed from the North Sea. With it's temperate climate the temperatures average around 2-3 °C in the winter months and 16-17 °C during the summer. During the summer months when the temperatures reach 30 °C or more you can head for the sandy beaches along the coast for some serious sun bathing. Hook of Holland (near Rotterdam), Scheveningen (near The Hague) and Zandvoort (near Amsterdam) are popular seaside resorts. You can expect rain all year round. Along with dykes, windmills, cheese, clogs etc.
